Columnist Patrick Marshall answers questions about problems users are having assessing their data usage and receiving email notifications from Facebook. Q: My internet service provider is Xfinity Comcast. My usage is close to the limit. According to their guidelines, that would mean watching streaming HD video 20 hours a day, for example, and that is not the case. I am not sure I trust the usage Xfinity is reporting. Is it possible to verify their numbers?

I am thinking of something akin to reading the electric meter to check my electric bill. The next part of my question concerns the various devices in the household, with the idea of finding out which ones are the heavy data users.

It has a statistics screen that shows packets in and out. I could estimate overall usage, but not for individual devices. I mostly use Apple, and I am not familiar with the reporting from Windows. My son has several Windows laptops that could be contributing to the high data usage. What data-usage statistics are available from Windows, and how do I access them?

Just go to Settings and click on Network and internet, then on Data Usage. If you want more detailed reporting, there are a number of free and non-free apps available.

One popular application for this is GlassWire.

GlassWire also lets you see what hosts are connecting to your computer, warning you if they are known threats, and monitor other activity on your network. Q: I am having a problem receiving email notifications from Facebook.

Comcast is my internet provider, and they say they have not put a block on Facebook. I have checked my notifications on Facebook, specified Facebook as a safe sender on my Outlook, unchecked Facebook notifications on Facebook to give the system time to rethink and then set notifications back up.

I have contacted Facebook to no avail or even a response. I stopped receiving notifications around Thanksgiving time. What am I doing wrong? That leaves only one other culprit: your spam filter. Note: Hardware and software manufacturers have a habit of blaming each other when users of their products run into problems.

The result could be as minor as changing a single pixel in a stored image, or as major as catastrophic failure of a computer. At the same time, they do offer an alternative explanation for tech support staff. Share story. By Patrick Marshall. If you are worried about sky-rocketing Internet data usage charges over your Wi-Fi network or you are facing speed lags or short of bandwidth problem as there are plenty of users on the single network.

Then this is the time to keep a tab on Internet data usage and limit the speed of it. Due to many users and plenty of devices attached to your Wi-Fi network it causes various problems. To deal with this situation, you can consider limiting Internet usage and limit speed on the wireless network. Use a router to limit Internet usage: This is useful security precaution for your network to configure your system router to set limitations on using the Internet on shared platforms.

Putting these restrictions, you can keep a tab on Internet data usage effectively. To do this, follow these steps. It is useful with many sensitive types of services like VoIP calls, video streams, online gaming etc. It helps you distribute bandwidth to different services according to their priority like a high priority to heavy resource services compared to less sensitive services like downloads, software updates, web browsing etc.

The exact Quality-of-Service features and settings may vary according to router brand and models but most of them provide a basic way to give higher priority to particular devices by tagging their Media Access Controller MAC or IP address.

Some router devices come with a set of collection of default QoS settings which you can change and customize.

To set services according to their priority, login to the router and check QoS settings. Now check default settings to check if some services are a higher priority. If not, check if it allows to segregate traffic based on the service type and go that route first to deal with any performance issue on the network.

Secondly, you can prioritize certain devices as a higher priority. Optimize your network to manage speed: In this step, you can consider connecting your system or devices to router or network via an Ethernet cable. It will help you alleviate the congestion on the airwaves. For low resource services, you can connect them to the 2. For those devices, which can only connect to 2. You can follow these simple steps to monitor your Internet data usage and keep a limit on the speed of different devices.

It also allows you optimum use of Internet services on your Wi-Fi network without any hassle. Summary: There are plenty of steps which determine your Internet data usage and help you limit the speed of it.

I am not a tech-savy but looking for help to set up some security to restrict internet usage as I live with my cousins and flatmates so want to restrict that those particular IP addresses should not access more than MB per day as I am the responsible one for paying internet bills and I am just over it keeping an eye on usage.

Please if some one can help me setting it out. These routers can limit the usage in a time schedule however they dont' support bandwidth limiting and download management. These are basic routers that are just mainly good for general Internet usage. Need more specific management would entail probably a different router or a business class router. Most Home user routers don't provide this kind of management.

Stb Level 1 Member Posts: 6. Wonder what is this then? This function can let user manage upload and download bandwith according to the application of each IP range, it is simple to complete the bandwith management by just selecting diffrent opperation mode, maximun upload or download, for each IP range. And can someone tell me the difference between Rev B1 and C1?

Probably can do this on the router then. Not all routers have this. Good info. Thanks for bringing this to the forum. I learned something new. I don't have any knowledge of the differences between these routers you mentioned. Only that there is probably minor HW differences and regional hw differences for each region of the world.

The UI might be the same however I presume there are subtle differences. What HW version is your router? Is there any problems with your router?

Bandwidth hogs can slow down your entire network, and per-device data usage is important if your Internet service provider imposes a bandwidth cap. The most accurate way to monitor this would be on your router itself. All the devices on your network connect to the Internet through your router, so this is the single point where bandwidth usage and data transfers can be monitored and logged. This will let you pinpoint any devices hogging bandwidth at that very moment.

Monitoring data usage over an extended period of time is harder. OpenWRT users can use luci-wrtbwmonwhich makes things a little simpler. This information must be captured on your router itself. This is more complicated than it seems, too. Different operating systems do have different tools that can help. This will change how Windows and some applications use the connection, however.

If the majority of your bandwidth usage takes place on a few computers, this will give you a decent overview of which ones are using the most data.

My Father-In-Law uses a program that does live tracking of the tickers of the different stock markets in the world. He is hogging the bandwidth of our network and doesn't care if he does or not. It is a real pain because he won't change his program nor get his own connection.
