Sticky pistons with an additional block stuck to them can be used for wider channels. Also, for a channel only 1-block wide, just one piston will work fine. The signal is commonly a leverso that when it is on the pistons extend, and when it is off they retract. There are a few things you can do with a water gate. One of the most useful ways to use a water gate is to harvest crops by channeling the flow of water over your mature crop and it will automatically pick your crops for you. The way I've seen most people do this stuff not a big fan of piston doors, sorry is make pistons push sand from the side of the door. Then, the sand falls and gets retracted into a storage roo For closing, the sand first gets "inchwormed" back up to the door space.
