The Meridian Streamer is a high performance audio source which allows streaming services used on smartphones, tablets and other devices to be played on your audio system.

It is also a Roon Ready device. Synchronises the volume controls of Bluetooth devices, playback apps, the Meridian system and third-party control across the system. Without the decoder, the listener enjoys CD quality reproduction.

MHR was the first approved encryption method for transferring high definition digital audio between components. Previously, it had to be in the analogue domain, reducing quality. MHR allows secure movement of high resolution digital audio within a Meridian system, without compromise, improving quality by reducing cyclic repetition. Traditional audio systems often require large, expensive cables to maintain their performance.

The result is simple, unobtrusive, and cost-effective cables that are easy to install. MQA is a technology that captures the full magic of an original studio performance. Visit mqa. A patented Meridian audio format that combines high bandwidth, security, and low jitter. Cookie Policy I accept.

MQA is Bad For Music. Here's Why.

Key Features. Technical Details.A new audio format which allows internet streaming of music at studio quality, seemingly free from copy-protection nasties, and with a clear way for you to know you have bought the real-deal. Seems like the perfect solution, right? Not so fast. If you are here for the technical insight, you might not want to read any further, but please do just give me a few moments of your time….

They are also seeking buy-in and investment from all the other majors, large indies and conglomerates. The majors hold what they see as the crown jewels of music; they own some of the all-time great recordings and have extensive rights to a huge catalogue.

They can, and do, use this as leverage over emerging music service providers and vendors, knowing the power of content ubiquity and how vital a comprehensive catalogue is to a new service or technology gaining traction and being successful. The rights they hold provide diminishing returns—the long-tail is shorter than expected by their share holders—so it is requirement that they leverage these recordings as effectively as possible, and sell them to us again and again. But as the landscape of content consumption changes from a commodity and ownership model, to one of utility and renting access—streaming—they know the balance of control over revenue streams is in flux, and gaining control over it is vital.

And that's exactly what MQA is gearing up for. MQA is an attempt to not simply sell the same content again at a higher margin, or to maintain audio quality in streaming ecosystems: it is an outright land grab.

It really is quite extraordinary. Manufacturers of recording equipment will have to license the technology and adapt their products. The costs, of course, are borne by the artist, either directly or recouped from royalties. Download and Streaming service providers will have to agree to commercial terms and become partners from which….

Hi-fi manufacturers and software developers will have to adapt their products and license the technology. End customers, having paid a premium for MQA music via licensed content providers, will also have to buy MQA certified players at increased cost, with a license paid for each unit shipped.

They know that consumers hate copy protection, and it would be a non-starter it include it. Now, ostensibly, this is a quality assurance check for the customer: if the little MQA light comes on, then I know that this file is legit. When in reality this is actually a quite masterful way of painting every other recording as inferior—when exactly the opposite may be the case—unless they are produced, distributed, downloaded and played via their approved supply chain. None of this is proposed by the company, and in fact we are assured that they have no plans to do this. This was the day that Tidal rolled out the first MQA Mastered releases for high-resolution streaming.

I spent most of that day setting up and then listening to the new material on three different set-ups at home while most of my journalistic compatriots were sprinting around CES, hearing about, but not actually trying out, the new world of high-rez streaming.

What is MQA Master streaming? In short, MQA is a method where high-resolution information is folded into the noise floor of a Once properly set-up we'll get into that later MQA Master files can be sent at either Not quite. During that time I became convinced that MQA encoded and decoded files sounded at least as good as the original files and occasionally on some files sounded even better than the originals. I have been eagerly awaiting the advent of MQA streaming for everyone.

Now it is here. First you need the latest version of the Tidal App. You will know if you have this version two ways - upon first boot-up the app will give you a screen that tells you MQA master files are now available.

The next thing that will be different is that under the "New Albums" section you will see a new category - "Masters" just to the right of the "Top 20" selection. Now that you know you have the latest version of the Tidal App you need to make some changes in the Settings section. Go to Settings. This will put you in a second selection box where you can turn on "Use Exclusive Mode. Did I discover any issues? If you own a Mytek Brooklyn you will discover that it will not play back the first track of an MQA file correctly unless you download the very latest firmware - it will not trigger the MQA light or show the proper resolution.

The current fix if you haven't or can't upload the latest firmware 2. The Brooklyn will then switch into MQA mode. But obviously updating the firmware via Mytek's control panel app is easiest. There you have it, so far. Happy listening! For more information about AudiophileReview. Luxury Publishing Group Inc.This is a form of audio streaming that does not lose quality or speed. Most of the selection below support the vast majority of hi-res music formats. Audiolab's first standalone music streamer is the third component in the company's mid-range Series, following the A integrated amplifier and the CDT CD transport. And it borrows tech and features from both.

With the same DAC chip from the amp and the circuit design from the transport, it presents a capable and composed sound with an inviting openness and a good honest, down-the-middle tonal balance.

So even the most discerning listeners should find plenty to love. The lack of a display is a bit of a bugbear, and the presets integration could do with some work. But those minor quibbles aside, this is a superb and affordable way to implement streaming into your system without compromising on sonic quality. Read the full review: Audiolab N Play.

If you want a stylish way to stream your music wirelessly then the Cambridge Audio CXN, with its brushed metal finish and intuitive menus, could be for you. But it's not just a looker - it has it where it counts, too.

Sound quality is fantastic with an enthusiastic, driven delivery that combines snappy timing with subtle levels of detail. We described the original CXN as "wonderfully entertaining", and it's heartening to see this second-generation model retaining that character.

So what sets it apart from its predecessor? The main new skill is Chromecast Built-In, which lets you stream content from compatible apps. It works very well - we were up and running in a matter of moments. But that's far from the only feature available. So, the same winning sound quality as the original with even more features to play with.

What's not to like? So as you can see, you get plenty of music source options, and they stream at a high bitrate, which is exactly what we like to see. So how does it sound? Very good indeed.By Chris Haslam TZ. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming speakers are all the rage, and old-school hi-fi separates remain popular.

But there is a third way that allows separates owners to have their audiophile stereo cake and eat digitally streamed music: streaming DACs, which you plug in to your 'hi-fi stack' or whatever the cool kids call them nowadays. These are not to be confused with ye olde worlde, hi-fi wired DACs, which let you convert digital audio sources from CD players remember them?

Nor are they to be confused with headphone DACswhich are more portable — often battery powered — and which you use to get better sound from your laptop or mobile via, obviously, headphones. It supports hi-res audio, allows the possibility of Sonos-like multi-room and is compatible with every streaming service most people could possibly want, from Spotify to Qobuz, Apple AirPlay to Bluetooth. It's also at a more than reasonable price, although if you want something really cheap and effective, try Google Chromecast Audiowhich practically comes free with cornflakes.

If you've got an existing hi-fi with decent speakers, CD player and Amplifier, but crave the digital delights of wireless audio, you need a streaming DAC. These simple plug-and-play receivers connect to a spare phono or 3. All the kit we've reviewed features a DAC or digital-to-analogue converter that improves, to varying degrees, the sound quality of streamed music.

While none will match a wire for hi-res file compatibility and playback, you'll often notice the difference with a lowly MP3. Many streaming DAC receivers can also be used to integrate your old kit into a wider multi-room set-up — some also with voice control support - whether that's Chromecast, Sonos or MusicCast, breathing yet more life into your antiquated audio kit.

You will, of course, need more compatible speakers or streaming DACs plugged into hi-fi systems to achieve this life goal. With its MusicCast system Yamaha has one eye on multi-room market domination, and with the simple to install, superb sounding WXAD wireless receiver they've got the gateway drug to get you hooked. Connect to your dumb old hi-fi via 3. Even if you don't want to create a multi-room system it's a great tool to upgrade your existing audio equipment, and sounds significantly better than the dinky DAC found in the admittedly far cheaper Google Chromecast Audio.

Around the back is a pair of stereo phono outputs and a 3. There's also an Ethernet connection if your home Wi-Fi isn't up to it. Using the Yamaha MusicCast app, set-up is serenely simple, and Wi-Fi passwords are shared within seconds. If you've got other MusicCast products — amazingly there are now over 50 to choose from — a couple of taps is all it takes to group them for multi-room playback.

Amazon Alexa support is also imminent.

I was surprised by just how precise and engaging the WXAD was. Obviously, quality depends on the source material, so while Spotify, Tune-In et al sound better than without the DAC, if you stream hi-res files bit kHz you're in for a real treat.

There are cheaper ways to get streaming, and there are more high-end ones, but Yamaha has struck the perfect balance between price and performance here. You could buy five Chromecast Audio dongles for the price of one Sonos Play 1 speaker, and create a complete multi-room system.

Well, okay, so long as you've got five old speakers lying around. Now THAT is a deal. This Oreo-sized dongle is arguably aimed more at upgrading Bluetooth speakers than hi-fi systems but it's still unbeatable value for money. Using Google Chrome it can mirror and 'cast' virtually any audio content, and it also works with Google Home voice control.

The dongle has a hybrid 3. You will need a slightly obscure type of adaptor to use it with the phono inputs found on most hi-fis: a female 3. The Chromecast app is slick and intuitive, which makes finding compatible apps to stream from and the actual set up a breeze. If you stream kbps from Spotify for instance, it sounds on a par with a wired connection. You won't be unearthing anything new from the recordings, but your ears won't hate you either.

It gives an immediately noticeable boost to sound quality and connectivity is rock solid via either Wi-Fi or ethernet. Audiophiles can choose to bypass the DAC's volume controls and also send hi-res files via Play-Fi with "no compression, down-sampling, or network distortion", using its Critical Listening Mode.

Weighing in at a feather light g, it outperforms Chromecast over Bluetooth and gives greatly improved results to your laptop when plugged in via USB. In fact, I'm betting you'll be excited and entertained by the dynamic upgrade provided, which sounds impressively grown-up.MQA will play on any device at better than CD quality.
