Obd2 has power but won t connect

When the scanner will not connect, usually the first thing we look for is a blow fuse or lack of power at the OBD2 connector. The most common cause of being unable to connect to the car is an issue with the ECU, either an internal fault or a wiring issue.

A qualified technician, such as one of our YourMechanic experts, can precisely diagnose your electrical problem by inspecting all the wiring and performing an ECU test.

Went and got my Blue Scanner I have previously used it on this vehicle and it worked great and plugged it into the port but it would not communicate.

Tried my scanner in a few other vehicles and it communicates with them, so the issue is not the scanner. Since I last used my scanner on my Beetle, I have installed and aftermarket stereo, so I'm pretty sure the problem with the communication is due to this install. From what I have read online, the problem is usually due to the K Line. I have checked fuses 12,29,32,34,37,41,42, and 43 and they are all good Fuse chart beetle. I have undone both battery terminals, held them together for 10sec, than apart for 10sec, than reattached Is there any chance this has something to do with why my obd2 port wont talk?

This issue prompted me to research online and ask different technicians on what the issue might be. But after conducting research online and speaking to different mechanics and technicians, I found out that a wide range of problems can cause it. These issues include an incompatible obd2 scan tool, bad fusesdamage in the circuit board, ECU, and failed computer. In most cases, these issues can be rectified and amended to allow you read the error codes.

First and foremost, you should inspect whether the code reader is compatible with your vehicle or not. Afterwards, try checking the fuses and see if they are working fine. If there is a bad fuse, you will continue receiving the error when you link the obd2 to the computer.

Get it replaced so that you can detect the error codes and allow them to be displayed.

In addition, one of the computers might be the problem. But identifying this is very difficult as a result of the data transferred between the two controllers. So, you will need to check the main ECU. Another way of identifying what the cause or the no linking could be is by testing pin to pin check with a wiring schematic while utilizing a volt meter to inspect every single wire.

If you are not able to find out what the issue is, you can visit a mechanic to figure out and correct any errors. All fuses are good. Any ideas?? Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

I also tried an expensive obd2 scanner but it didnt work unless if i use the power supplier. Does that mean there is no enough power from obd or the obd2 has old type of obd?

Also once i went to a workshop to scan my car and he had to connect his scanner to the battery of the car to read the ecu.

OBD2 scanner won't connect to ECU follow these easy steps

First, check the pin-out of the connector to make sure you are getting 12 from the battery on pin 16 and ground on 4 and 5.

If you are not getting 12v from 16try ignition on or even with the engine running. Check for a bad fuse. Seems like the Bluetooth dongle that works with Easydiag should work with Torque Pro. I have 3 ELM compatible dongles and all work with Torque. I do have the pin out. I checked it already with the test light long time ago but i guess im gonna try again with the voltmeter to see the actual volt of each one. The pin out : 4,5,7,16 K line only Does it need to have pin 15?

I do have a car starter and after market radio, but both have been professionally installed for about 3 years now. Scan tool 3 different ones won't link with the ECM. Would that imply a PCM issue, a battery issue, or something else? Oh yeah, and make sure youre ready for an ass kicking, chances are it's going to happen.

At this point you need a schematic of the computer communication circuits and start disconnecting one module at a time until the communication comes back. First, the obd port has power. So have I ruined my bcm? I have a cheaper OBD2 scanner that I tried as well, and got the same result. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. Like the PCM is mad at the port and won't talk lol. But seriousl, do I need it reprogrammed or is there an easier fix that you mechanical masters can offer my shadetree efforts.

Thanx in advance. Here is is the OBD2 port pinout, a bad ground will prevent communication, pin 5 is a ground. See if it has a good ground. Key off and use a good 10 megaohm impedance ohmmeter to test the pin 5 to ground.

Note that the OBD2 port is fused. They're typically on the same circuit. I had this issue on an Escalade, turned out to be a fuse. Check your fuses. If you aren't getting power at the port easy to test with your multimeterthe fuse is likely the issue.

What to do if the OBD II scanner doesn’t communicate with the vehicle

If you ARE getting power, then options are:. I'd start with the fuse. If that doesn't get you anywhere, remove the two mounting screws for the OBD2 connector and physically examine the pin receivers proper term eludes me at the moment and make sure that they all look the same in terms of shape and distance from the front of the connector.
