On the vast majority of motor vehicles, the rear suspension system is supported by leaf springs — those three or four-layer panels that consist of steel strips.

The load capacity and ride height of a given vehicle is determined by the curvature and leaf count of the spring kit. Thanks to leaf spring, the rear of the vehicle are given elevation to compensate for extra backload weight. This keeps the vehicle horizontal, as opposed to slouched. None of this would be possible without leaf spring hangers and shackles. Vehicle and trailer leaf spring hangers attach the leaf spring to the chassis frame at both ends, while shackles are placed between the hanger and spring eye at the rear of each leaf spring.

Each part of the leaf spring assembly comes preinstalled in vehicles of all types, but as with various parts throughout a vehicle, the hangers and shackles eventually wear out.

Therefore, when the time for replacements does arrive, it's important as a vehicle owner to know how to install rear shackles and hangers. When you change out the leaf springs in a truck, SUV or van, it's crucial to take note of the related parts that keep the springs in place and that allow the springs to function as intended.

These related parts include the bushings, shackles and hangers, which are integral to the function of the leaf springs. Without these parts, the leaf springs would have no flexibility and would therefore be unable to elevate the rear of the vehicle when it's most necessary, such as when a vehicle carries a heavy back-end load. The hangers are attachment pieces that connect the leaf springs to the chassis of an automobile at both ends.

Without rear leaf spring hangers, a vehicle would have no back lift, and therefore slump at the rear and possibly drag across pavement when heavily loaded. Consequently, a vehicle that lacks leaf springs is liable to have burdened rear axles and tires, due to the excess weight that would impact the back. As time takes its toll, leaf spring hangers can develop rust and begin to crack in spots. As issues like this start to take hold, it's necessary to change out the hangers before the problem spirals out of hand and dangerously impacts your vehicle's suspension.

Fortunately, leaf spring hanger replacement kits can be purchased for a vast range of makes and models from the world's leading automakers. Best of all, these replacement kits are relatively easy to self-install, even if you only have basic car maintenance skills.

A quality leaf spring hanger kit will give optimal support to a motor vehicle for many years, through all kinds of weather and driving conditions. Leaf spring shackles are located within the suspension systems of motor vehicles.

At each end of the rear axle, the leaf spring shackle plays the crucial role of ensuring that leaf handles make the right changes.Forums New posts Search forums. What other changes might I notice? Will the suspension flex differently - more flex, less flex? Will the truck track the same on the freeway? In the searches I've done so far, the primary thing I've read is that longer shackles will tend to be more vertical, and this will make the suspension less compliant on smaller bumps Is this true?

Anything else that might be different? Since pics are always good Wile E Coyote Out in the streets, they call it murder!Shackles or leaf spring shackles are found within a leaf spring suspension system on trucks, suvs, vans, and cars. Shackles play an essential part in making sure leaf handle length changes correctly. Shackles are located between the spring and the hanger which is attached to the frame on one end usually rearto allow for movement, while the other end of the leaf spring usually front stays mounted to the chassis and cannot move.

Without a shackle's help, the vehicles leaf spring would not be able to flex and if you were to hit a bump the tire would lose contact with the surface of the road instead of being able to adapt and remain steady. There are many different features when dealing with replacement leaf spring shackles. Purchasing longer or shorter shackles can have it benefits as well, longer shackles allow for greater lift height as well as a substantial amount of ground clearance, whereas shorter will be a lowering shackle.

OEM shackles do not last forever. Over time, shackles can become worn out, rusted or even break apart causing more undesired movement and affecting handling. Replace your worn out shackles to avoid dangerous situations for you as well as others on the road while reaping the benefits of a more stable and secure ride. We'll make it easy for you. Follow the steps below and have your shackles installed and secured in no time. How to Install or Replace Leaf Spring Shackles Using a floor jack, raise the rear differential of your vehicle off the ground, Use jack stands under the frame to support the vehicle Lower the jack so that the suspension "droops", this will take the weight of the vehicle off the shackle and allow for removal of the mounting bolts Remove the lower mounting bolt from the shackle and spring and then lower the axle so that the spring drops out of the shackle Remove the upper mounting bolt which attaches the shackle to the mount on the frame then remove the existing shackle Insert the new shackle and mounting bolt.

Leave the bolt loose to allow alignment of the shackle with the spring Raise the rear axle and align the spring eye with the shackle.

Slowly work the spring back into the shackle, raising the jack a little at a time until the holes in the shackle and the spring eye line up. Install the mounting bolts through the shackle and the spring. Make sure to tighten accordingly Jack up the car to remove the jack stands then lower the vehicle back down Make sure the bolts stay tightened with weight on them. Q: What is a complete lift kit? Why buy one? What parts do complete lift kits normally come with? Do complete lift kits ever vary in terms of part composition?

If you are looking to gain clearance under your vehicle for rough roads or get some extra wheel well space for larger wheels and tires, complete lift kits are the absolute best way to go because it is essentially one stop shopping. With a complete lift kit you can gain the clearance you need to drive on the trails and will give your rig an aggressive new look at the same time that is sure to turn heads as you drive down the road.

So whether you are after the right look or need some additional function from your truck, we highly recommend complete lift kits. Normally if you are dealing with a complete suspension lift kit this means you will get four new lift springs, mounting hardware, bushings and shock absorbers to match your new springs all in one kit. If it is a body lift kit this means all the appropriate spacers, bushings and hardware to complete the lift.

If it is a shackle lift the kit will include shackles, bushings and hardware. However, there is often variation between brands on what is included in a complete lift kit. For example some kits may include extended brake lines or longer shackles in the package in addition to springs, shocks and hardware.

On the other hand some companies require you to buy extended brake lines or even shock absorbers separately and only include the basic springs and hardware in the kits.

Be sure to look carefully at what is included in each kit and shop accordingly. If one kit is noticeably cheaper than another there is probably a good reason; it may not include all of the same components. Q: What is a suspension lift kit? How does a suspension lift differ from a leveling lift, and how does either of those differ from a body lift? A: There are many ways that you can lift your vehicle.

The most common forms include suspension lift kits, leveling lift kits and body lift kits. A suspension lift kit is a means of raising your truck, SUV or Jeep by utilizing suspension components such as taller springs and longer shock absorbers.
